Frozen breaded shrimp in the air fryer is the best way to cook frozen shrimp. For the longest time I baked frozen shrimp in the oven like the box told me to. Then I fell in love with my air fryer and started air frying everything I could including the frozen breaded shrimp. I won't go back to baking it in the oven and when you see how easy it is to cook frozen shrimp in the air fryer you won't either!

Cooking breaded shrimp in the air fryer makes it perfectly crispy and cuts down on the cook time but quite a bit. Making fried shrimp in the air fryer quicker and easier then other cooking methods.

Types of Frozen Breaded Shrimp

There are a few different types of frozen breaded shrimp that you will find in the freezer section all of which you can make Air Fried Breaded Frozen Shrimp with. I did not try this with beer battered shrimp so I can not guarantee that it will work exactly the same, but I am assuming it will because the breading is also frozen.

Butterfly shrimp. These shrimp are bigger and they are cut, peeled, deveined and flattened to be "butterflied" before they are breaded. These tend to still have the tail left on them. When the larger shrimp are not cut in the butterfly way they are called jumbo shrimp.

Popcorn Shrimp. This refers to the size of the shrimp. They are smaller shrimp that are peeled and while they are full shrimp they are small shrimp. You can cook these in air fryer but the cook time will be shorter then butterfly shrimp.

Beer battered shrimp. This shrimp is coated in a batter that is fluffy when cooked.

Breaded Shrimp. This shrimp is breaded with breadcrumbs and has a more crumbly breading.

How long do you cook breaded shrimp in an air fryer?

If you are cooking popcorn Breaded Frozen Shrimp the cook time is 7-10 minutes for half of a normal sized bag. When you are cooking popcorn shrimp you can pour them into the air fryer basket about half full. You will want to remove the basket and shake them around a bit half way thru the cooking time so they all cook evenly.

If you are cooking frozen butterfly shrimp the cook time is 7-9 minutes for 10-15 shrimp. How many you are cooking depends on how big your air fryer is. When you are cooking butterfly shrimp they must be in a single layer.

Tips for Cooking Frozen Shrimp in an Air Fryer

Do not defrost them. You want them to be solid frozen when you put them in the air fryer.

Single layer. Only cook them in a single layer if you are making butterfly shrimp or jumbo, do not stack them or they will not cook thoroughly.

Read your instructions. Some air fryers will require you to use cooking spray when you are using them, others don't so be sure to check the specific directions for yours.

What to serve with Fried Shrimp
